June 2022 Leadership Webinar Series

To be effective and accomplish their own goals, local government leaders must delegate work to others. This requires planning what work to delegate to what resources. Once work is assigned, it is critical to give meaningful feedback and resolve performance problems that surface.

Our webinar series in June 2022, open to all leadership levels, consists of three 90-minute webinars designed to help leaders master this work cycle to accelerate and expand what their teams can accomplish.

Webinar 1: Effective Delegation, Wednesday, June 8, 10:00am – 11:30am

Local government employees often have to do more with less, in terms of staffing, budgets, and time. Effective delegation helps leaders make the most of those resources. Delegation serves as a critical nexus between time management, employee development, and workforce engagement.

RGS’ Effective Delegation webinar provides an opportunity for leaders and staff to learn how to delegate effectively and/or fine tune existing delegation skills. In this workshop participants:

  • Evaluate their own delegation skills
  • Define effective delegation
  • Discuss benefits and barriers to delegation
  • Learn about successful delegation practices
  • Plan their next delegation

Webinar 2: Giving Powerful Feedback, Wednesday, June 15, 10:00am – 11:30am

One of the most important things leaders do is provide feedback to people that report to them. But leaders often struggle with this task due to apprehension about how feedback will be received.

This course helps leaders re-frame feedback as a powerful tool to deliver information about employee performance and the overall goals of the department and agency. In this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize when and how often feedback should be given
  • Utilize a 5-step process for giving constructive feedback
  • Describe specific behaviors or actions and their impact
  • De-charge emotional reactions to feedback
  • Collaboratively discuss and agree upon solutions to improve performance

Webinar 3: Resolving Performance Problems, Wednesday, June 22, 10:00am – 11:30am

Resolving performance issues is a key part of every supervisor’s job, but it can be challenging to know the best way to respond. Performance issues can be caused by variety of factors and often the root cause can be different across employees and situations.

The key is that there is not a “one size fits all” solution. This class provides useful tools to identify the underlying issue and help you set a path to resolve it. Course content includes information to help supervisors:

  • Identify their style of resolving performance issues
  • Assess and identify the cause of performance problems
  • Surface and respond to performance issues in a way that impacts performance
  • Stay focused when the cause of the problem may be a moving target
  • Understand the importance of documentation
